Notes on UMass Conditioning Night #6

Tuesday, 9/23/2008
Turnout of about 15 people. After some light stretching, we did sprints, box jumps, and various other lower-body conditioning exercises to warm up at Haigis Mall, then did a slanted wall traversal at the Fine Arts Center. Moved to Goessman Lab where there was a hanging wall traversal, and continued onward to work on balance and precisions outside of Lederle. To end, Travis led a pushups workout, Scrib led a set of jump squats, and Yair led another partner stretching ses… Continue

Notes on UMass Conditioning Night #5

Thursday, 9/18/2008
What a night! I'm still sore from it. Forgot to count again, but we had close to 20 participants, at least 5 of which were girls. Also, we're starting to develop a core group of about 10 people who consistently come out to train at every session. Last night, we warmed up with some qigong breathing/balance exercises, random QM, and agility drills before spending some time on precision jumps and landings at Haigis Mall. We then moved to the hill between Franklin DC and B… Continue

Notes on UMass Conditioning Night #4

Tuesday, 9/16/2008
I forgot to count the number of people, but the turnout seemed to be consistent with previous nights. We had a few newcomers who'd found out about us from the Collegian article or from friends. Warm-up consisted of a jog including obstacles around the Fine Arts Center, QM walking/running, and dynamic stretching. We worked on lower and upper body conditioning throughout the night, and ran to Hasbrouck to work on balance, cat hangs, pull-ups, and a horizontal wall travers… Continue

Notes on UMass Conditioning Night #2

Tuesday, 9/9/2008
About 15 people showed up tonight. The weather was rainy, so we stayed under the overhang of the Fine Arts Center most of the time. We had a QM-heavy warm-up, followed by dynamic stretching (high kicks) and a conditioning session that focused primarily on upper body and core strength. After a break for water and static stretching, we moved on to some vaulting basics, and finished with a game of PDQ before warming down.

Conditioning Exercises
- jumps and landings… Continue

Notes on UMass Conditioning Night #1

As some of you know, I currently run a parkour club at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Starting this semester, we're going to hold regular conditioning nights every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00-8:30pm. The goal is to get ourselves sweaty, dirty, and pushed to the brink of exhaustion, with the result of improving our basic skills of running, jumping, climbing and crawling on the way to becoming better traceurs.

In this space, I'm aiming to start a series of blog posts that report o… Continue
